University College London (UCL)

Founded in 1826, UCL was the first university to be established in England after Oxford and Cambridge, providing a progressive alternative to those institutions’ social exclusivity, religious restrictions and academic constraints.

The university's main building (picture right) was designed by William Wilkins who went on to build the National Gallery.

The Cruciform Building

The Cruciform building (right) was designed in 1896 by Alfred Waterhouse RA (1830-1905) as a replacement building for University College Hospital, which had an earlier building on the Gower Street frontage of the same site.
